PLATON invites all interested schools to bring the PLATON philosophy into their science classrooms and make it more interactive and interdisciplinary. PLATON will offer the necessary tools to teachers that will allow them to introduce an interdisciplinary aspect to their teaching, thus allowing their students to get a better understanding of the connection between what they learn at school and the world around them. In addition, teachers will be offered a toolkit, comprised of guidelines, techniques, examples and tips which will help them introduce inquiry practices into their everyday teaching progressively and at their own pace.

Finally PLATON will also offer a collection of curriculum related activities (short-term and long-term) which they can choose to use in their class as well as in collaboration with the colleagues who teach other science disciplines.

 

  • Τransform your school science class in a student-centred, interactive and interdisciplinary environment.  
    Such environments can significantly increase students' excitement in science by involving them to class activities that allows them to use their imagination and creativity. Participating teachers will receive training and supporting tools that will help them transform their current teaching style towards a more student-centred approach that fosters interdisciplinary learning and increase the development of their students' critical thinking skills and other 21st century skills.
     
  • Have access to a well-established framework of collaboration between teachers of your school unit based on inquiry and interdisciplinary learning.
    PLATON schools will be offered the necessary tools and training that will allow the teachers to synchronize and coordinate their teaching and make better use of the science curriculum by identifying common grounds between their lessons. Such a collaborative framework of teaching can help students understand the common ground under concepts and principals taught in different science disciplines and thus grasping the universality of natures’ laws.
     
  • Receive a collection of curriculum based activities to be used as examples that demonstrate the connection between what is taught at schools and everyday life.
    Such activities will enable students to understand the added value of science and its importance to our life through the introduction of ‘real-life experiments’. Teachers will also be provided with the tools and know-how to build such collaborative activities and thus address main trends and challenges of contemporary science classrooms.
     
  • Be part of a pan-European network of schools, exchange experiences, promote your work and bring your students in contact with students around Europe. 
    PLATON schools will be able to share their work with a wide community of practice within their own country as well as all over Europe. Teachers will be empowered to become teacher trainers themselves and share their know-how with other teachers.

Teachers of the participating schools will receive training on all the tools and aspects of the PLATON methodology. Additionally, PLATON project partners will provide constant support to schools throughout the school year. Participating teachers will receive training certification  and they will also have the opportunity to become certified PLATON ambassadors and be able to train other teachers.  More particularly, the basic tools and aspects of training include:

Teachers participating in PLATON will be invited to make use of the PLATON methodology in their school during the 2017/2018 School year.
More specifically:

  • Make use of the The 3D Interdisciplinary Map of Science Ideas and the Inquiry Under the Microscope' toolkit and introduce interdisciplinary and inquiry practices into their everyday science classes.  As PLATON aims to have an impact on everyday teaching, teachers are not expected to add additional teaching hours to their programme; instead they are invited to use the PLATON tools in their ordinary classes.
     
  • Use and test our deep-science-learning toolkit with their students as an alternative assessment method.
     
  • Use one or more short stand-alone activities, in one of your science classes as an example of a 'real-life' experiment connected to the subject they are teaching.
     
  • For countries were teachers have the option (or obligation) to have a project activity with the students. Teachers are invited to collaborate with other science teacher of their school and implement together with their students a project-based interdisciplinary activity.
     
  • Share your experience with us on the use of the PLATON tools, activities and methodology through an anonymous report.

Νο. All the PLATON tools and activities are designed to be used in your ordinary science teaching classes. For teachers who are expected (or for those who just want) to carry out project activities PLATON also offers interdisciplinary project-based activities.

PLATON aims to foster collaboration between teachers who teach different science subjects in order to facilitate interdisciplinary learning. We believe that by identifying common grounds between science disciplines can help the students get a better understanding of science as a whole as well as facilitate teachers in making better use of their curriculum. Collaborating teachers will be able to make the 3D Interdisciplinary Map of Science Ideas to identify the concepts that are common in their disciplines and discuss how they can introduce them to their students in a way that helps them retain knowledge and increase the opportunities of recalling previously acquired knowledge and build on it. Additionally collaborating teachers will have the opportunity (if they wish so) to do an interdisciplinary project-based activity with their students.

You will need to do at least one activity. Other than that, the number of activities implemented is completely up to the teacher. Short term activities are designed to fit European science curricula. In combination with your traditional introduction to a subject it should not take more than 3 didactical hours.

Project-based activities are not mandatory. You may do none if you want. If you do wish to do one though, we strongly recommend that you coordinate with other teachers of your school in order to actively introduce to your teachers the idea of collaboration and interdisciplinary learning. Project-based activities can last from 5 didactical hours to a whole school year. It is up to the teachers to decide the length and the amount of work assigned to the students.

As many as you like. Ideally we recommend you involve around 50 students so you can have a number of students that is big enough to understand the impact of the new elements you introduce to your teaching.

The project team will carry out several training workshops (typically 3 hours long) for participating teachers. In addition, you will be provided with additional online training materials. Finally, the project partners will provide constant support to the PLATON schools and they will answer any questions you have.

All PLATON schools and PLATON teachers will receive certification of participation in the project and a dgital badge. Additionally PLATON teachers will also receive training certification.

The PLATON team will provide the participating schools with a reporting form for teachers to record their experience and give us feedback on the tools and methodology. Reports will be anonymous (neither the names of the teachers nor the names of the schools will be mentioned in any evaluation document of the project) and they will only be used to measure the impact of the PLATON tools and methodology.

All materials, tools and resources will be made available through the PLATON E-Agora.

PLATON is a two-year European project launched on September 2016. It aspires to provide teachers and school communities with a coherent teachers’ training framework which will update their current teaching practices. More particularly, PLATON aims to offer an open and innovative training framework to teachers of primary and secondary education which will focus on:

- Promoting student-centred teaching approaches;

- Promoting a holistic interdisciplinary approach;

- Support the use of online educational tools;

- Support the meaningful collaboration between teachers of the same school.
